Music & performance

Talk about concerts like an insider: scores, keys and tuning, and the subtle differences between spelen, bespelen, uitvoeren and optreden.

Grammar

Spelen, bespelen, uitvoeren, optreden

  • spelen is the everyday verb, with no article before the instrument: Ze speelt viool / piano.
  • bespelen is more formal and takes a direct object: a specific instrument, or figuratively an audience: Hij bespeelt een zeventiende-eeuws orgel. Zij weet het publiek te bespelen.
  • uitvoeren = perform a work (orchestra, choir); noun de uitvoering: Het koor voert de Matthäus-Passion uit. optreden = appear on stage as an artist: De band treedt vanavond op in Paradiso.
  • Pitch: vals = out of tune, zuiver = in tune. Toonsoort is the key, maatsoort the time signature; the conductor slaat de maat.
  • Etiquette: in classical concerts people normally don't clap between movements (tussen de delen). Dutch audiences are often teased for giving a staande ovatie almost every time.
