The Tweede Kamer
Follow a debate in the Tweede Kamer: addressing via the chair, the third person, motions, amendments and the minister's promises.
Grammar
Parliamentary address: via the chair, in the third person
- Speakers address the chair: speeches and interruptions open with Voorzitter, …. Members do not address each other directly; when someone slips into u or jij, the chair may say Via de voorzitter, graag.
- Members and ministers refer to each other in the third person: Is de minister bereid om…?
- Instruments: written Kamervragen; the oral vragenuur on Tuesday afternoon; a motie (motion: a request or judgement); an amendement (a proposed change to a bill); the motie van wantrouwen. A motion can be aangehouden (held over) or ingetrokken (withdrawn).
- Votes are normally cast per party group (fractie); on request there is a hoofdelijke stemming (roll-call vote). Everything said is recorded verbatim in the Handelingen.
