C2 · Lesson 303 · Between the lines (C2)
Implicit meaning & politeness
Read between the lines of “direct” Dutch: soft refusals, polite past tense, and what “we nemen het mee” really means.
Grammar
Indirectness in a direct culture
- The Dutch are known for directness, but requests are cushioned: Zou je misschien even…?, Het zou fijn zijn als…, Zou het mogelijk zijn om…?
- The past tense creates distance and politeness: Ik vroeg me af of je even tijd had. Ik wilde vragen of… Ik dacht: misschien kunnen we…
- Soft refusals: Dat komt nu even niet zo goed uit. In meetings, We nemen het mee or Ik zal erover nadenken often mean nothing will happen.
- Disagreement is often wrapped: Daar zit wat in, maar…, Ik zie het iets anders, Ik vraag me af of dat verstandig is (= I think it's unwise). Met alle respect, maar… announces sharp criticism.
- Hints carry requests: Het is hier wel koud, hè? may mean “close the window”. Reading them is tussen de regels door lezen.
