Proverbs in real use

Understand proverbs the way native speakers actually use them: cut short, alluded to and twisted.

Grammar

Half a proverb is enough

  • Native speakers often say only the first half of a well-known proverb and let the listener finish it: Tja, wie a zegt… (…moet ook b zeggen), Als de kat van huis is… (…dansen de muizen op tafel).
  • Proverbs are often alluded to rather than quoted: Nu mag hij op de blaren zitten. (from wie zijn billen brandt, moet op de blaren zitten), Hier geldt echt: oost west, thuis best.
  • Headlines and ads twist proverbs, keeping the rhythm but changing a word: Oost west, thuis werkt best (about working from home). You only get the joke if you know the original.
  • Register: proverbs sound folksy and a bit old-fashioned. Speakers often signal distance with zoals het spreekwoord zegt, zoals mijn oma altijd zei or an ironic tone. Piling them up sounds like a parody; one well-placed proverb sounds natural.
