Rhetorical devices
Name and use the stylistic devices of speeches, columns and literature — from metaphor to the drieslag.
Grammar
Stijlfiguren
- Metafoor vs vergelijking: a comparison has als or zoals (sterk als een beer); a metaphor leaves it out (Zij is de rots in de branding). Personificatie gives human traits to things: De wind huilde om het huis.
- Hyperbool exaggerates (Ik heb het je wel duizend keer gezegd); an eufemisme softens (heengaan for sterven, iemand laten gaan for ontslaan).
- Speeches love the drieslag (tricolon: veilig, eerlijk en welvarend), the anafoor (same words opening successive sentences: Wij kiezen voor…, wij kiezen voor…), the antithese (Niet de woorden, maar de daden tellen) and the retorische vraag (Wie wil er nu niet gelukkig zijn?).
- Pars pro toto names a part for the whole. The classic Dutch example: Holland for the whole of the Netherlands — something people from Groningen or Limburg may not appreciate.
- A climax builds up in steps (Ik kwam, ik zag, ik overwon); an anticlimax ends on purpose with something small, often for comic effect.
| stijlfiguur | voorbeeld |
|---|---|
| metafoor | Hij is een rots in de branding. |
| vergelijking | Ze is zo koppig als een ezel. |
| hyperbool | Ik sterf van de honger. |
| eufemisme | Hij is ons ontvallen. |
| drieslag | Sneller, beter en goedkoper. |
| retorische vraag | Moeten we dit nu echt accepteren? |
