Sarcasm & cynicism

Recognise and produce biting Dutch sarcasm: dismissive replies, mock surprise and the stand-alone alsof-clause.

Grammar

Saying no without saying no

  • Dismissive replies: Ja, dag! (forget it!), Mooi niet! (certainly not — mooi here has nothing to do with beauty), Ammehoela! (no way! — informal; often said to come from Amsterdam, origin uncertain).
  • A stand-alone alsof-clause is pure sarcasm. It is a subclause, so the verb goes to the end: Alsof hij ooit op tijd komt! Alsof ik dat geloof!
  • Zullen + wel expresses cynical expectation or disbelief: Hij zal het wel weer vergeten zijn. Dat zal wel. (yeah, right).
  • Mock surprise and sympathy: Je meent het! (you don't say!), Wat een verrassing. (flat tone), Sterk verhaal. (a likely story). Het zal je maar gebeuren can be genuinely sympathetic or ironic — tone decides.
  • Cynical prediction: Daar kun je donder op zeggen = you can bet your life on it: De prijzen gaan weer omhoog, daar kun je donder op zeggen.
