C2 · Lesson 307 · Essays, columns & satire (C2)
Satire & parody
See how satire works in Dutch: register clash, mock admiration, scare quotes and the verbs of mockery.
Grammar
The machinery of satire
- Register clash is the main engine: a trivial subject in solemn officialese, or a grave one in chatty language: Het kabinet spreekt diepe zorg uit over de lege koekjestrommel.
- Parody imitates a recognisable text or genre (a press release, the eight o'clock news); persiflage mocks a person or style through exaggerated imitation. Satirical news site De Speld writes invented news in flawless news style.
- Mock admiration with heus and scare quotes: Er is een heuse werkgroep opgericht. (an actual working group, imagine that!); de ‘tijdelijke’ maatregel (that has been in force for ten years).
- Verbs of mockery differ in tone and construction; note the met in two of them:
| expression | construction | tone |
|---|---|---|
| hekelen | iets/iemand hekelen | sharp criticism |
| op de hak nemen | iemand op de hak nemen | teasing, mocking |
| de spot drijven met | met iets de spot drijven | scornful mockery |
| de draak steken met | met iets de draak steken | poking fun |
| persifleren | iemand persifleren | exaggerated imitation |
