Sports commentary
Follow and imitate live football commentary: verbless bursts, the present tense, scores as nouns and the geography of the pitch.
Grammar
The grammar of live commentary
- Commentators narrate in the present tense and often drop the verb altogether: Bergwijn, naar binnen, schot… en raak! A goal is greeted with Hij zit! or Daar is ie! (ie = spoken hij).
- Scores are nouns with de: Hij maakt de 1-0 (spoken één-nul); de gelijkmaker (equaliser), de aansluitingstreffer (the goal that pulls one back, e.g. 2-1 after 2-0), de winnende treffer.
- The pitch has its own nouns: de zestien (penalty area), de kruising (top corner), de tweede paal (far post), de korte hoek (near corner).
- Street football gave Dutch panna (the ball through an opponent's legs), a word generally traced to Surinamese street football. Ending a match as a contest is de wedstrijd op slot gooien.
