Wine & beer tasting

Describe what's in the glass with precision: nose, palate and finish, -ig adjectives and the small words for small amounts.

Grammar

Describing taste precisely

  • A tasting follows a fixed order: kleur (in the glass) → neus (aroma: in de neus) → smaak (in de mond) → afdronk (finish: kort, lang, droog, bitter).
  • Adjectives in -ig made from nouns mean “with notes of”: fruitig, kruidig, moutig, hoppig, rokerig. Grade them with licht, een tikje or uitgesproken: een licht kruidige wijn met een uitgesproken droge afdronk.
  • Small amounts: een vleugje vanille (no van), but een zweem van rook, een hint van citrus (with van).
  • Beer has its own vocabulary: the schuimkraag (head), and abbey and Trappist styles such as dubbel, tripel and quadrupel, brewed in Belgium and also in the Netherlands (for example La Trappe near Tilburg).
