Where Dutch and English part ways

A finished event with a time reference is often perfect in Dutch but simple past in English: Ik heb hem gisteren gezien = I saw him yesterday (not “I have seen”).
Something that started in the past and still continues is present + al in Dutch: Ik woon hier al tien jaar = I have lived here for ten years. Ik woon hier sinds tien jaar is Belgian Dutch (compare French depuis dix ans) and sounds non-standard in the Netherlands.
English -ing is mostly not translated with a separate form: use aan het + infinitive or a position verb + te: Hij zat de hele avond te lezen. Ik sta al een uur te wachten.
English would for past habits is not zou: On Sundays we would visit Grandma = Op zondag gingen we altijd naar oma. Pas means “not until” or “only (just)”: De winkel gaat pas om tien uur open; Hij is pas twintig.
Calques from English (anglicismen) such as Dat maakt geen zin (for Dat is niet logisch / Dat slaat nergens op; Dat heeft geen zin means “that's pointless”) or Ik ben 100% zeker are common in speech but marked as sloppy in careful writing.

I've lived here for ten years.	Ik woon hier al tien jaar.	Ik heb hier tien jaar gewoond. (= no longer)
The shop doesn't open until ten.	De winkel gaat pas om tien uur open.	…niet tot tien uur open.
We would go to the beach.	We gingen altijd naar het strand.	We zouden naar het strand gaan. (= were going to)
That doesn't make sense.	Dat slaat nergens op. / Dat is niet logisch.	Dat maakt geen zin.
