A1 · Lesson 18 · Learning & describing
In class
Ask the teacher to repeat, explain or slow down — politely.
Grammar
Polite requests: kunnen and mogen
- To ask someone to do something, use kunnen + an infinitive at the end: Kunt u dat herhalen? Kun je dat spellen?
- Use Kunt u…? with a teacher or a stranger and Kun je…? with a friend or classmate. You'll also hear Kan je…? in speech.
- To ask permission for yourself, use Mag ik…?: Mag ik iets vragen? Mag ik uw woordenboek even lenen?
- Handy fixed phrases: Wat betekent dit woord? Hoe zeg je “dog” in het Nederlands? Ik begrijp het niet. Kunt u iets langzamer praten?
