Everyday verbs

Twelve verbs you'll use every day — and how to conjugate them.

Grammar

Present tense: regular and irregular

  • Regular verbs: ik + stem, jij/u/hij/zij + stem + t, wij/jullie/zij + infinitive: ik maak, jij maakt, wij maken. Watch the spelling of the stem: nemen → ik neem, geven → ik geef, zeggen → ik zeg.
  • When jij/je comes after the verb, the -t drops: Wat maak je? Wat doe jij? (but Wat doet hij?).
  • If the stem already ends in -t, no extra t is added: weten → ik weet, hij weet. Short verbs: doen → ik doe, jij doet; zien → ik zie, jij ziet.
  • willen, kunnen, zullen are irregular: ik wil, ik kan, ik zal. The infinitive goes to the end: Ik wil koffie drinken. Kun je me helpen?
  • weten = to know a fact, kennen = to know a person or place: Ik weet het niet. vs. Ik ken Amsterdam goed.
