Learn Dutch
A2 · Lesson 79 · Going out

At the restaurant

Order a full meal, mention allergies and ask for something with or without.

Grammar

Ordering politely

  • The simplest way to order is Ik neem…: Ik neem de soep als voorgerecht. When everyone orders in turn, just say Voor mij…: Voor mij de vis, alstublieft.
  • Mag ik…? asks for something: Mag ik een glas water? Ik wil graag… and the extra-polite Ik zou graag … willen also work: Ik zou graag de pasta willen.
  • Ik had graag… looks like a past tense but means “I'd like…”. It is the standard way to order in Belgium; in the Netherlands you'll hear it too, but Ik wil graag… is more common there.
  • Met = with, zonder = without — no article needed for things in general: koffie met melk, een pizza zonder vlees, zonder ui, alstublieft.
