Linking words

Link sentences with daarom, bovendien, echter, kortom — and get the word order right.

Grammar

Connectors and inversion

  • Linking adverbs like daarom, bovendien, toch, daardoor, ten eerste count as the first element of the sentence, so the verb comes next, then the subject: Het regent, daarom blijf ik thuis.
  • Compare want and maar, which don't change the word order: …, want ik ben moe. — but …, daarom ga ik naar bed.
  • Kortom is usually followed by a comma and normal word order: Kortom, het was een succes.
  • Dus works both ways: Het regent, dus ik blijf thuis. and …, dus blijf ik thuis. are both correct.
  • Echter (however) is formal and normally comes after the verb, not at the start: Het plan is echter te duur.
  • Spelling: ten slotte (two words) = finally, lastly; tenslotte (one word) = after all: Ten slotte wil ik iedereen bedanken. vs. Hij is tenslotte de baas.
