B1 · Lesson 149 · Speaking & writing well
Discussing & debating
Defend a point of view, admit a point and draw a conclusion.
Grammar
Structuring an argument
- Signpost your points: Ten eerste (firstly), ten tweede (secondly), bovendien (moreover), al met al (all in all). They count as the first element, so the verb comes next: Ten eerste is het te duur. Bovendien kost het veel tijd.
- Daar staat tegenover dat… (on the other hand, …) introduces the other side. After dat the verb goes to the end: Daar staat tegenover dat het openbaar vervoer goedkoper is.
- Admit a point before you push back: Ik geef toe dat het duur is, maar… Emphasise with Ik wil benadrukken dat…
- Round off with al met al or uiteindelijk, again followed by the verb: Al met al vind ik het een goed plan.
| step | example |
|---|---|
| first point | Ten eerste is het te duur. |
| extra point | Bovendien is het slecht voor het milieu. |
| the other side | Daar staat tegenover dat het snel is. |
| conclusion | Al met al ben ik ertegen. |
