Verbs at the end

Put two or three verbs in the right order at the end of a sentence.

Grammar

Verb clusters

  • In a subclause all the verbs go to the end. A modal usually comes before the infinitive: Ik weet dat hij morgen moet werken.
  • With a participle both orders are correct: …dat hij het heeft gedaan = …dat hij het gedaan heeft.
  • A modal in the perfect becomes an infinitive, not a participle (the “double infinitive”): Ik heb moeten werken. (not gemoeten). The same goes for laten, gaan, blijven: Ik ben gaan zwemmen.
  • With three verbs the conjugated verb comes first, then the infinitives: …dat ik het had moeten doen. A separable verb may stay whole or split: …dat ik heb moeten afzeggen / …dat ik af heb moeten zeggen.
