De or het?
Dutch has two words for “the”.
Grammar
De, het and een
- About two thirds of nouns take de; the rest take het. Learn every noun with its article.
- All diminutives (ending in -je) are het: het meisje, het huisje.
- All plurals take de: het huis → de huizen.
- Een (“a”) is the same for both: een tafel, een huis.
- Adjectives get -e before the noun, except with een + a het-word: de grote hond, het grote huis, een grote hond — but een groot huis.
