A2 · Lesson 66 · Getting things done
Groceries
Buy the right amount at the market, the cheese shop or the supermarket.
Grammar
Quantities without “of”
- Dutch puts the amount straight before the product — no word for “of”: een pak melk, een fles water, een stuk kaas.
- Units of measure stay singular after a number: twee kilo appels, drie ons ham. Containers do take a plural: twee flessen water, drie pakken melk.
- Een ons is 100 grams and een pond is 500 grams: twee ons kaas = 200 g.
- At the counter you'll hear Wat mag het zijn? (What would you like?), Mag het iets meer zijn? (Is a bit more OK?) and Anders nog iets? (Anything else?). Finish with Nee, dat was het.
