B1 · Lesson 158 · Grammar workshop 3
Where does niet go?
Put niet in the right place — at the end, or before the part it negates.
Grammar
The position of niet
- When you negate the whole sentence, niet goes towards the end — after the conjugated verb, pronouns, definite objects and time words: Ik zie de man niet. Hij werkt vandaag niet.
- But niet comes before: an adjective after zijn/worden (Het is niet duur.), a prepositional phrase (Ik woon niet in Amsterdam. Ik wacht niet op hem.) and an adverb of manner (Hij rijdt niet snel.).
- Niet also comes before the verbs and separable prefixes at the end: Ik kan niet komen. Ik heb het niet gedaan. Ik bel je niet op.
- To contrast one part, put niet directly before it and continue with maar: Ik woon niet in Utrecht, maar in Gouda. Ik heb niet de rode, maar de blauwe gekocht.
- With an indefinite noun (een or no article), use geen instead: Ik heb geen auto.
